27 “ Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs. On the outside, they look beautiful, but inside they are full of dead bones and rot. 28 So you too, outwardly appear righteous, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. Matthew 23: 27-28

In this world of constant exposure and scrutiny, we are continuously confronted with our limitations and weaknesses; this is why it is easier to create imaginary versions and wear masks because, in that way, you do not have to face them. The same thing happens in our Christian life; no one wants to show their vulnerability. Many appear to be the holiest, perfect and blameless when inside, they are rotten and submerged in sin. They are so immersed in the lie that they project that loose perspective. By wearing masks, they will eventually forget who they are. They will forget what is crucial. By maintaining their facade, they make it impossible for the Holy Spirit to do his work of transformation and renewal in them.
It is sad to see how even people who claim to be Christians have fallen into this trap. Unfortunately, instead of working on their weaknesses and insecurities, they cover them up, creating masks to hide the things they dislike about themselves. The competition is so harsh that we are constantly measuring ourselves with the melting pot of others.
Who is better?
Who has more?
Who achieves more?
Who serves more?
Who prays more?
Who has the most beautiful and tidy house?
Who has the best children?
Many create an alternate reality where they can cover all the bases. A fictional reality that may be able to fool others, but there is one they will never fool. Some dedicate their lives to criticizing those who disagree with what they consider perfect; they become relentless critics who mercilessly tear apart, hurt, and destroy.
Unfortunately, those who do not present their true face, and hide behind masks, are not attacking the true root of the problem and are only using a temporary remedy. They are like those who put a Band-Aid over a cut that needs stitches; sooner or later, the wound will open again and bleed. It is the same in life; eventually, every lie reveals itself, and the consequences are damaging. They are covering their faults with a lie, and God hates falsehood, and we do not deceive Him. God knows our hearts. We forget that God is more interested in our relationship with Him than in our perfection. Well, in his eyes, He already sees us as perfect. God sees in us as a finished work. He does not see what we see; He sees beyond.
"Yahweh answered Samuel: Do not look at his appearance, nor at the greatness of his stature, because I reject him; because Jehovah does not look at what man looks at; for man looks at what is before his eyes, but Jehovah looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7.
But worse still, we forget that we cannot fool God. We can fool our brothers, friends, bosses, etc. but not God. He knows who we are; He knows our hearts. "Do not be fooled; no one makes fun of God; For whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." Galatians 6:7.
We do not need to impress God; we must open ourselves to Him, be honest, and give Him our faults and weaknesses so He can work on them; For his power is perfected in your weakness: "And he told me: My grace is enough for you; because my power is perfected in weakness. Therefore, I will rather glory in my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." 2 Corinthians 12:19.
Remember, we have to be real before God and before everyone. We have to live without pretenses. God wants us to be men and women of a single piece, blameless, and for this, we cannot wear masks. We have to present ourselves to Him as we are. When we surrender and drop the masks God begins to work in our lives. We must seek God in intimacy, presenting ourselves to Him as we are. When the door to your room closes, your masks fall off, and God knows what is inside you.
Today He wants to heal you. He wants to free you from your masks. He loves you deeply and intensely and wants you to be yourself; all the time. Come to Him in prayer and give him your masks. There is nothing more beautiful than everyone knowing who you are, with your weaknesses and imperfections, because the Glory to God will be greater when everyone sees that it is not because of your talents or strengths but because of the Grace of God that you do things.
